Can a locksmith make a car key without the original?
Short answerFor many vehicles, yes. It depends on the year, make, model, whether the car uses a regular key or push-to-start, and whether the locksmith has support for that system. It is not a universal yes for every car.
What “without the original” means
It means there is no working key in hand to copy. The only key is gone, every fob is missing, or the car was purchased with an empty ring. That is different from adding a spare while another key still starts the car.
One working key vs none
If a key still starts the car, you are usually in a spare or extra-key job. The car already recognizes at least one transponder — a chip in the key that the vehicle has to see before it will start. When nothing works, the job is origination: making and teaching a key from the vehicle itself. The tools, time, and what we need from you can change. That is why we ask whether any working key remains when you request a price.
Why year, make and model come first
Key systems are not shared neatly across a brand. A 2012 sedan and a 2021 SUV from the same maker can be different jobs. Blade shape, chip type, and whether a push-button fob is involved all hang on that triplet. A photo of a blank key from the internet is not a substitute.
Regular key vs push-to-start
A traditional ignition key may still have a chip in the head. A push-to-start car is looking for a proximity / smart key — a fob the car notices when it is nearby — not a blade you turn. Saying “make me a key” without that distinction can send the wrong person, or the wrong part.
Proof the vehicle is yours
If there is no key, we need a reasonable showing that you have a right to the car: registration, title, or a bill of sale is typical. That is not bureaucracy for its own sake. Making a key for a car someone cannot document is a line we do not cross.
Why nobody honest promises every vehicle
Some cars need equipment or parts we may not support, especially certain newer systems. Domestic and Asian vehicles are the usual fit for this shop. German brands are not an advertised specialty. Confirm the car before you rearrange the day — or pay for a tow on the assumption that a key can be made on the spot.
No working key left?
Send the year, make and model. We will tell you whether this is a car we can do.
