Need the locks to take a new key?
Rekeying changes which key operates the lock you already have. It is not automatically a new deadbolt on the door. If the lock body is worn out or you hate the hardware, that is a lock change instead.
What rekeying actually does
Inside a typical pin-tumbler lock, the combination can be set so a new key works and the old keys do not. The cylinder stays. The look of the lock stays. You are not paying for a full hardware swap unless the lock is too damaged to rekey.
When people ask for this
- You just moved in and do not know who still has keys
- A roommate, contractor, or ex still has a copy
- House keys were lost but the locks themselves still work
- You want several doors on one new key
Rekey vs replace
Rekey if the lock is sound and you only need new keys. Replace if the lock is failing, you want a different style, or you are stepping up to a smart lock. If you are not sure, describe the door and what is wrong. We will not upsell a full change because the word “rekey” sounded too small.

Can you rekey after I lost my house keys?
If you can still get in (or after a lockout), rekeying is how you retire the missing keys. If you are currently locked out, say that first.
